Itinerary

There will be a variety of transportation used ranging from buses, private vehicles, river boats to canoes, bamboo rafting, walking and of some jungle trekking. This really will be a voyage of discovery and an expedition where you must be prepared expect the unexpected.

From crowded villages to dayak traditions, from flowing rivers to inland lakes, from palm oil plantations to magnificent mountains, this adventure really does have it all!

The trip will be starting and finishing at orangutan rescue centres and you will be able to see orangutans and exotic wildlife throughout the whole trip.

A truly awesome, non-stop, adventure across the third largest island in the world.

Day 1: 1 November: ARRIVAL JAKARTA
Arrival in Jakarta. You will met by hotel staff and transferred to the FM7 hotel. Today we meet in our Jakarta hotel and have a team briefing and prepare for travel to Balikpapan in East Borneo tomorrow morning. Overnight at the FM7 Hotel. Tomorrow the challenge begins !

Day 2: 2 November. FLY JAKARTA – BALIKPAPAN – SAMBOJA LESTARI
Travel to Samboja Lestari Lodge meet the great team from BOSF. We will see the orangutans being cared for there, leanr more about the release programme and in the afternoon travel to the "black river" and look for proboscis monkeys. Overnight at Lodge. (B,L,D)

Day 3: 3 November.   SAMBOJA – LOAJANAN – MAHAKAM RIVER
Check out from Samboja Lodge after visiting the sunbears in morning, then transfer by car drive to Loajanan take about 2.5 hours driving. Along the way we will visit the Canopy bridge Bukit Bangkirai. Arrive in Loajanan and immediately board on the house boat.  On the way up to Muara Muntai you’ll enjoy the scenery on the Mahakam river and sunset along the river. Dinner and overnight on the house boat. (B,L,D)

Day 4: 4 November. MUARA MUNTAI – MANCONG or TANJUNG ISUY – LOAJANAN 
Wake up early morning, and enjoy the Sunrise along the Mahakam river. After breakfast short sight seeing arround the Muara Muntai Village to see the activity of local people and local market which is the main road built by the iron wood to protect from the rainy season. Then board on the Motorized canoe and across the Jempang Lake by passing the Jantur fishermen vilalge. If the water level permit will continue up the Ohong river through Ohong Fishermen village which is the house built on the water (floating house). Along the river to Mancong you’ll see many of the Kingfisher, Long tail maccaque, Fresh water Eagle, Snake and proboscis monkey. Arrive in Mancong/Tg. Isuy, a welcome ceremony will held by the chief of Dayak and following by traditional dance with his people. Lunch provide on the motorized canoe. Afterwards return to House boat and continue cruise down the Mahakam river to Tenggarong. On the way down river if we lucky will see the fresh water dolphin. Dinner and overnight on the boat. Day 5: 5 November.  LOAJANAN – PENAJAM – MUARA KOMAM/BATU BUTOK
This morning our houseboat arrives in Loajanan, we then start the long day's drive first to Panajam through Balikpapan. On arrival at Ferry ship, across the Balikpapan bay to Panajam, then continue to Batu Butok or Muara Komam. Arrive in the afternoon proceed to check in at simple accommodation called Losmen. Today's drive shall be apporx 9 hours. (B,L,D)

Day 6: 6 November. MUARA KOMAM – TANJUNG – DANAU PANGGANG - AMUNTAI 
Morning before breakfast, by motorized canoe visit the Mangkulangit Cave and river forest to see the wild life and ricefields. Back to Losmen then breakfast, afterwards check out and drive (approx 8 hours) to Danau Panggang in South Borneo by passing Tanjung City. Arrive in Danau Panggang to observe the water Buffalos which is life on the swampy. Evening proceed and check in at simple losmen in Amuntai. (B,L,D)

Day 7: 7 November. AMUNTAI – KANDANGAN – LOKSADO 
Morning check out from Amuntai village then drive (approx 3 hours) to Loksado by passing Kandangan City. Arrive in Loksado check in at Meratus Lodge or local house. Afternoon sight seeing around the village and views to the Meratus mountains. (B,L,D)

Day 8: 8 November.  LOKSADO – JUNGLE TREK
After breakfast we start our all day jungle trek into the rain forest and mountain. You’ll enjoy the jungel trekking and searching for wildlife like monkeys and birds, and will tonight we will stay at the village at Malaris in a traditional Dayak Long House. Be treated to traditional dayal way of life. (B,L,D)

Day 9: 9 November. LOKSADO – BAMBOO RAFTING – KANDANGAN – BANJAR BARU
After breakfast, we take ride by motorbikes (pillion) to Haratai Water fall and have time for a swim, then back to the Loksado start your Bamboo rafting down Amandit River for 2.5 hours. Along the way we travel past local villages and through rainforests and hopefully see some wildlife. Afterwards by car (apporx 4 hours) to Martapura by passing Kandangan city. Afternoon arrive in Martapura (Banjar Baru) proceed to check at simple hotel for your accommodation. (B,L,D)

Day 10: 10 November. MARTAPURA – LOCAL MARKET – CEMPAKA – BANJARMASIN
After breakfast, check out then visit the local market, handycraft, jewerly shop to see the activity of local people. Then continue to Cempaka village to observe the local people how to dig and looking for diamonds. Afternoon drive of about 2 hours to Banjarmasin and proceed to check in at hotel for your accommodation. (B,L,D)

Day 11: 11 November. HOTEL – FLOATING MARKET – PALANGKARAYA 
Wake up early morning at 05:00 then board on the wooden boat called Klotok down the Barito River or Lok Baintan visit the Floating Market to see the people do transaction on their canoe. You can also buy some of the fruits along the river. Then return to Hotel, having breakfast and shower. Afterwards, check out and transfer to Palangkaraya (Capital of Central Borneo) . Our drive will take us approx 4 hours. Afternoon arrive in Palangkaraya proceed to check in at a local hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 12: 12 November. PALANGKARAYA – ORANGUTAN
Today visit the orangutans islands. Walk from Rungan Sari to local village and travel by motorized canoe on the river to see the orangutan release islands which are operated by BOSF as well as the jungle surrounds. Afternoon we drive to town stopping along the way at the BOSF visitors centre to see some of the work being done to help save the orangutans. Overnight local hotel (B,L)

Day 13: 13 November. PALANGKARAYA 
After breakfast, we will drive to meet our canoes and spend the morning travel along the Sabangau Lake and head head a small river into the jungle for a short jungel trek and visit the local WWF reforestation project. If we are very lucky we will see a wild orangutan. Lunch in the jungle and afterwards rteurn by canoes to town for dinner at local warung. Overnight local simple hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 14: 14 November. PALANGKARAYA – PANGKALAN BUN
After an early breakfast we shall start the long drive through to Pangkalan Bun (approx 10 hrs). Along the way we will see eamaples of the local villages and exisitng forest areas, stop at a beautiful lake area, and have lunch at a waterfront resto in the town of Sampit. On arrival proceed in Pangkalan Bun to check in at Hotel for overnight. (B,L)

Day 15: 15 November.  PANGKALAN BUN – KUMAI – CAMP LEAKEY
An early start today will have you traveling in our own klotok boats up the Sekonyer river to Camp Leakey, the oldest camp set up for the orphaned orangutans. Arrive at Camp Leakey, take a short trek in the surrounding area and meet some of the resident orangutans and their caretakers prior to visiting the museum. Head back to the klotok for lunch, where you will likely see orangutans. Later you head back to the camp for the afternoon orangutan feeding time. At the end of the day you will be given a tour of the surrounding forest area, then cruise down Camp Leakey River to your overnight location at Crocodile Lake. While here, you will most likely see other wildlife of Borneo such as macaques & proboscis monkeys. Overnight on the klotok. (B,L,D)

Day 16: 16 November. PONDOK TANGGUY –  PESALAT -TANJUNG HARAPAN
Leave early and head back down river to Pondok Tanggui for morning orangutan feeding, then you will travel up river to Pesalat Plantation where you will plant some trees to help regenerate the forest. After lunch you will take a tour of the local village ahead of a final stop at Feeding Station #1 os ee the orangutans. Later that afternoon you will travel down river, stopping along the way to watch the  proboscis monkeys on the riverbanks. As dusk falls, you will stop at a mangrove of Nipah palms where you will enjoy dinner watching millions of fireflies. Back to Kumai harbour and overnight in your Pangkalan Bun hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 17: 17 November. PANGKALAN BUN – KUMAI – KUDANGAN
Early morning we leave Pangkalan Bun by car for a long day's drive to Kudangan (approx 10 hrs). Along the way we shall see palm oil plantations, rainforests and local villages. Arrive in Kudangan proceed to check in at Dayak Long House to see the way of their life. Stay and overnight in Dayak Long house. (B,L,D)

Day 18: 18 November. KUDANGAN – BORDER – NANGA TAYAP
After breakfast, leave to Nanga Tayap by passing the Border between Central and West Borneo (approx 3hrs). Along the way you’ll tropical rain forest and palm oil plantation and Dayak villages. After arrival in Nanga Tayap we shall take a short jungle trek with the our dayak hosts looking for monkeys and birds. Stay and overnight at simple hotel/losmen for your accommodation. (B,L,D)

Day 19: 19 November. NANGA TAYAP – KETAPANG 
After breakfast, check out for the drive by car to Ketapang (approx 3 hrs). On arrival in Ketapang check into our hotel for lunch before heading out in the afternoon for a town tour and visit to the local "city forest" area. Dinner and overnight at local hotel. (B,L,D)

Day 20: 20 November. KETAPANG – IAR 
An early morning start sees you venture out to see the newly protected areas of the local jungles where researchers work to protect the orangutans and other animals. You will take a bumpy ride in private vehicles out to the Pesagguan River and then be taken by klotok up river to the remote research station where you will be given talks by our team about the area and why it is so important. You will then hike through the peat swamps in the jungle in search of wild orangutans and other wildlife. In the afternoon, you will cruise down the river in search of proboscis monkeys on the way back to meet our cars and return to town to have dinner at a local restaurant. Overnight at the local hotel (B,L)

Day 21: 21 November. KETAPANG – IAR
Today, you will visit the orangutan clinic near Ketapang. You have been granted this very special access to the centre and while there, you will be given a tour of the facilities, talks about the current situation with the orangutans and other wildlife plus be given the opportunity to participate in the orangutan enrichment program. Afternoon we head to beach for sunset drinks before the final nights celebration dinner at a local restuarant. Overnight at the Aston Hotel. (B,L)

Day 22: 22 November. KETAPANG – JAKARTA 
Today you will be taken to the airport to link up with your return flight to Jakarta and your late evening return flights home. Please note that no overnight accommodation is included for this night. If this is required, please let our office know and we can assist with arrangements OR you can continue with your Indonesian adventure.(B)
